Our smuggler was caught in Slovakia. He faces up to 8 years in prison

Slovak customs officers detained the smugglers who tried to smuggle from the Ukraine more than 1.5 million cigarettes worth more than 209,000 euros. The Ukrainian driver, who was carrying the cargo, faces up to eight years in prison.

This was reported by the Slovak news agency SITA.

"During the customs control of the freight transport at the border crossing point Vyshnye Nimetske-Uzhgorod, using scanning device and a dog, they found and seized 7,700 cartons of illegally imported cigarettes," – the statement of the spokeperson for the Office of the customs service in Michalovce Clara Balohova says.

According to the spokesperson, the car was heading from Ukraine to Poland in transit through Slovakia. The contraband cigarettes were hidden in the cutting metal equipment, which was being transported in the truck. English brand cigarettes in the original factory package were stamped with Ukrainian excise labels.

Total amount of prevented financial loss is 209,341 euros, the statement said.

The Ukrainian driver who is suspected of having committed the criminal offense was detained.The case was transferred to the Criminal Department of Customs Service of Slovakia. According to Slovak laws, if the guilt is proved, the Ukrainian citizen faces a sentence of imprisonment for a term of three to eight years.
