On the occasion of Mukachevo’s birthday: Top 10 interesting places (PHOTOS)

Mukachevo is as beautiful as many European capitals and, without a doubt, has its own unique attractions, the Mukachevo.Today informs.

1. "Palanok" Castle

The oldest and most famous building in the city, which seems to be imbued with history and undiscovered secrets – Mukachevo Palanok castle. It belonged to the Koryatovich, Rakoczi families; withstood many sieges, and many legends are associated with it.

2. City Hall

Mukachevo City Hall built not so long ago – in 1903 – now hosts the City Council, a bookstore and a tourist center. Mukachevo City Hall has always been the administrative building of the city, it is located in the center, on Myr square. The City Hall is open to everyone who wants to see the interior. In the courtyard, you can see the exhibition of contemporary sculptors.

3. Catholic church of St. Martin

One of the most prominent sights of the city of Mukachevo. The building has a light brown color scheme. The highest church tower is decorated with a clock, and the portal at the entrance – with an arch and columns. Equally famous is the "opus" organ set up there in 1913 by Otto Rieger from Budapest. The highlight of the Cathedral is the ancient chapel of St. Joseph, dating back to the XIV century.   The chapel is in the Gothic style. It is a stone building with spiky windows and strong supports (buttresses). The facade of the chapel is decorated with a stone rose and decorative crosses. The chapel still retains wall paintings of the XIV century.

4. The White House – Palace of Rakoczi Princes

It is one of the tourist meccas of the city, which used to be the residence of the Rakoczi princes – the Transylvanian royal family. The palace was built in the 17th – 18th centuries, in the Renaissance and baroque style. And its name comes from the white color of the facade.

In the years 1746-1747, the one-story building was rebuilt and significantly expanded according to the project of the famous German architect Johann-Balthasar Neumann. It was a rather complex reconstruction. On the facade, there are two original windows and 5 renovated ones. Open stairs lead to the main entrance.

In the XIX century, the stone portal of the central entrance was built. In the middle above the entrance, there is a decorative vase. The windows of the main facade, the vaults of the palace rooms are decorated with stucco. The interior spaces of the middle wing of the building have a dome-shaped vault.

Now, it has 21 rooms, 98 windows, 91 doors and 10 antique ovens.

 

5. St. Nicholas Monastery

The abode was founded in the IX century by the monks who accompanied Princess Anastasia, the daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, on the way to her future husband – the Hungarian king. Another version tells about the victory of Prince Fedir Koryatovich in the battle against the snake. At that spot, he built a church and cells in 1360.

6. Cathedral of the Pochayiv Icon of the Mother of God

Built in 1993. The cathedral fits well into the architectural ensemble of the city square.

7. Drama Theater

On 1884, the "Society for the construction of the theater" was founded in Mukachevo, and the theater was built 12 years later. The theater was opened in the autumn of 1899. However, since there was no local theater company, it was mostly touring companies that performed there. In 1947, the first official theatrical season ran in Mukachevo Theater, which was opened with the performance "The Commander Suvorov". In Soviet times, the repertoire was predominantly in Russian. In 2014, the team of the theater decided to remove the word "Russian" from the title. On February 9, 2017, Mukachevo City Council established the municipal institution "Mukachevo Drama Theater" based on the Transcarpathian Regional State Drama Theater.

8. Celtic place at the Lovachka

The owner recreated a lot of everyday and cultural details of the Celtic life. It has a tasting wine cellar, which is more than 400 years old. Only there, you can try a natural apple cider, home-made ale, herb vermouth, grappa, schnapps, gin. All drinks are made of natural materials, without pasteurization and filtration.

9. Honey House

The Honey Museum in Mukachevo was founded in 2010 by the Perest family of beekeepers. The display includes a real hive with bees living behind transparent walls, beekeepers’ tools, a collection of toy bees, samples of honey from 27 countries of the world! Visitors of "Honey House" can taste 4 types of Transcarpathian honey, as well as famous mead and herbal balm.

10. Greek Catholic Assumption Cathedral

Built in 1829 – 1859. A clock from Munich is located on the bell tower of the cathedral. The building was reconstructed in 1990’s, an iconostasis by artist I. Volosyansky was set up there. The temple painting is in Byzantine style. A fragment of the Holy Cross, a copy of the Turin Shroud are kept inside the temple.
