"Another landscaping from local authorities could have been seen today at Svoboda Avenue, 22. Several trees were brutally cut, and promptly taken to an unknown destination. Probably, they are going to build there another café with a terrace or a store with a Chinese junk …" – an Uzhgorod resident Ferenc complains in the Facebook group "Architecture of Uzhgorod" and posts speaking pictures.
He adds: "The air in Uzhgorod is very polluted. If residents of the city continue to tolerate the destruction of green space, in a few years we will lose the garden city and will have the market city instead."
As the city landscaping department commented to uzhgorod.in, the trees on the avenue needed to be cut because "they were growing in violation of state building codes, damaging hip roofs on buildings there." They said that for two years, people had been requesting to remove the trees because they damage the roof. They also informed that "in this area, there will be the reconstruction of non-residential buildings with landscaping of the surrounding area."
