City authorities of Uzhgorod harbor ambitious plans to transform the Petofi sq. into a pedestrian zone. As municipal newspaper "Uzhgorod" wrote with reference to the deputy mayor and the manager of the affairs of the executive committee of Uzhgorod City Council Daniela Gevorgyan, due to heavy traffic in the regional center the city government plans to create another pedestrian area in the historic center.
The spacial Petofi square, which now serves more as a parking lot will be subjected to conversion.
How exactly they plan to block traffic on the Petofi square the municipality yet do not know – they are preparing appropriate project and negotiating the ideas on improvement of the area regarding greenery, benches, elements of urban decor. According to the Head of Architecture and Urban Planning Department of Uzhgorod City Council Oleksandr Sheba, detail project and its budget has not yet been compiled. "We still do not know how much it will cost us, but we already have a pre-agreement on cooperation with enterpreneurs who carry out business on the square. Currently we are working with conceptual design, and if everything goes well, the implementation of the plans may start as early as the next year. Due to the fact that pedestrian zone becomes larger, it will be possible to install there a sculpture or, for example, a fountain."
