Experts of the forestry told how the exotic for our forests relict species – the cork tree – ended up in Volovets district.
– According to our information, the cork tree was planted around 1970’s, – says the main forester of the Volovets Forestry, Myron Stetso. – Given that the tree lives up to 300 years, our plantation is still relatively young. The average diameter of the trunk is up to 30 cm, but these trees can reach up to 120 cm in diameter and up to 28 meters high.
Currently, the exotic plants are under the protection of the foresters. Volovets foresters also made a tourist trail to the cork tree plantation.
The cork tree is considered to be one of the relict plants that were growing on the planet before the Ice Age. Thus, the cork tree forest in the Volovets forestry is a true natural monument. The trail starts from the information board, runs through the gazebo and ends in the cork tree plantation and the marvelous beech grove.
