Mukachevo railway station is planned to be turned into an international transport hub

Already at the beginning of the next year, the "Ukrzaliznytsya" PJSC plans to turn the Mukachevo railway station into a large transport hub for wide-gauge and euro-class trains. Passenger trains will be departing to the countries of the European Union from the passenger platform, which will be built at the station. Trains from Europe will also be coming to Mukachevo.

The "Ukrzaliznytsia" PJSC plans to implement the project as soon as possible. Passengers will be able to go from Mukachevo to Hungary, and then to Slovakia, Romania and other countries. Passengers of the trains coming to Mukachevo will be able to make a convenient transfer to other trains going to other parts of Ukraine.

At the moment, there is a euro-gauge track from the border to the city of Mukachevo and it is used only for freight transportation. Euro-gauge track is located three hundred meters from the train station. So, at the first stage, it is planned to built at the station a passenger platform for European trains near the existing track with a width of 1435 mm. This will allow to organize train traffic to Hungary (Budapest, Zahony), and then to Slovakia (Kosice, Bratislava) and Romania (Satu-Mare).

"Thanks to the European gauge track, Ukrainian trains will be going deep into Europe. Unlike Chop, the city of Mukachevo is more conveniently located geographically, so the potential geography of routes from Mukachevo is much wider. In addition, it is the second largest city in Transcarpathian region, where major transport flows are concentrated. So, we initiate the creation of a large transport hub in Mukachevo", – the Acting Chairman of the Board of the "Ukrzaliznytsya" PJSC Yevhen Kravtsov reported.

The management of the company believes that the implementation of this project will have many advantages for both the Ukrainian and Hungarian parties.
