On Friday, May 17, members of the Transcarpathian Regional Council at the first plenary meeting of the XIV session gave permission for use of mineral resources in the village of Skotarske in Volovets district for construction of a new Beskid tunnel.
In order to start work on the tunnel, the managers of the project, which will cost more than 2 billion hryvnias, must only complete approval of all required documents. And the adoption of this decision by the Regional Council is another important step in this direction.
The construction of a new Beskid tunnel is an international project funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This tunnel is located at the fifth Pan-European international transport corridor that runs through Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and Russia, and 40% of goods in transit to Western and Central Europe are transported through it. The current Beskid tunnel was built in 1886, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it no longer meets the technical standards, and requires constant monitoring of railway workers.
