There are reasons to talk about modern Ukrainian political class as a product of Holodomor, as many modern Ukrainian politicians are direct descendants of Ukrainian peasants turned into collective farm slaves in the thirties of the last century. The writer Oksana Zabuzhko expressed this opinion in an interview with the Radio Svoboda.
According to her, the current "political elite" was fostered by the "colonial nation that for three generations in the twentieth century was cast in the darkest slavery, beginnig from 1933."
"And all our "political elite" are the children and grandchildren of these most unfortunate collective farm slaves – all these symonenkos, lazarenkos, lytvyns … And that’s why they perceive Ukraine as a huge collection farm, from which you want to haul a band of hay to your house. The fact that a band of hay now is measured in some multi-digit figures on offshore accounts does not matter, because psychologically it is still a band of hay" – says Zabuzhko.
According to her, now it is more important to understand the demographic and civilizational consequences of that policy, which led to the famine of 1932-1933.
