Intellectual of left-leaning views, well-known dissident during the communist regime in Hungary, the winner of the Széchenyi Prize, philosopher Mihaly Vajda, as reported by the Hungarian publication Magyar Nemzet, renounced the title of the "Honored Professor of the Debrecen University," explaining on his Facebook page that he does not want to be associated with the institution, which declared Vladimir Putin an honorary citizen.

At the end of August, the Debrecen University announced its intention to confer the title of the "Honorary Citizen" (Civis Honoris Causa) on the president of Russia.

The staff of the Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry joined the Department of Constitutional Law of the University of Debrecen in dissociating themselves from the decision of the Senate to award the Russian president.
