The opening of the memorial sign to victims of the Holocaust and the heroism of saviors, who dared to resist the genocide of an entire people, was the culmination of the Days of Jewish Culture that were taking place in Uzhgorod for 3 days.

The honorable delegation of Hungary, Jewish clergy and representatives of public organizations of this community, local authorities – the grand opening of the memorial was a solemn, mournful and yet life-affirming event – honoring the lives lost; saviors, who tried to resist the inhumane Nazi machine. And not only to remember, but also to prevent this horror ever to be repeated!

"Tens of thousands of people were killed… That is hundreds of thousands of those, who never had a chance to live – their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren… Today, we have been mostly talking about Jews, but there were also Gypsies, Ukrainians, Hungarians… For me, a phrase uttered today was the key: you can not change memory, you can not forget memory… Therefore, I am here…" – MP, our compatriot Robert Horvat said.

The solemn mournful rally ends with a common prayer of chief rabbis of Ukraine and Uzhgorod, then all participants put around the memorial stones of memory, creating its common picture…

The authors of the idea of the memorial and the design of the territory are sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko and architect Petro Szarvas.
