Ukrainians with passports of other countries will be deprived of citizenship, said the Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko. According to him, the Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings over the incidence of dual citizenship among the inhabitants of Transcarpathia.
"The situation with dual citizenship is unambiguous. Violators must be punished. If, in the course of the investigation, the Security Service of Ukraine finds out such violations by any other persons – city mayors, heads of regional state administrations, ministers, pensioners, servicemen – they will be deprived of Ukrainian citizenship," – said the Prosecutor General at the briefing in Kyiv. He did not specify according to which article the investigation is being carried out, because now dual citizenship in Ukraine is not a criminal offense.
Meanwhile, the spokeswoman of the Security Service of Ukraine, Olena Hitylanska, did not confirm the words of the Prosecutor General. "I do not know anything about it. This is a strange statement, and as far as I know, there are no provisions in the Ukrainian legislation on liability for acquiring the citizenship of another state," – she said in the comment to the "Hromadske". Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine stated that the situation with the issuance of Hungarian passports in Transcarpathia completely was within the competence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the special service can only initiate for officials with other countries’ citizenships to be deprived of access to state secrets.
