A resident of Bukovyna used malware to steal citizens’ logins and passwords for authorization on various Internet resources. The man faces up to 6 years in prison for that.
Cyberpolice officers in Chernivtsi region together with investigators of the regional police, with the participation of the KORD special unit, under the procedural control of the local prosecutor’s office, exposed the offender in unauthorized interference with computer networks.
Cyberpolice found out that a 29-year-old resident of Chernivtsi had purchased and modified malicious software and used it to steal the logins and passwords of Internet users.
Subsequently, the offender sold accounts on thematic forums. One account cost about $ 10. Mostly foreign citizens were affected by the illegal actions of the defendant.
The offender received the money on e-wallets banned in Ukraine and later transferred it to a bank card.
The police searched the defendant’s place of residence. As a result, system units, laptops, hard drives, flash drives, mobile phones, bank cards were seized. The seized items were sent for relevant expert examination.
Criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Art. 361 (Unauthorized interference in the work of computers, automated systems, computer networks or telecommunication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine were initiated over the incident. The perpetrator faces imprisonment for a term of three to six years. The investigation is underway.
