On March 30, at 19:00, jazz bassist David Friesen (USA) and sax player Joe Menis (USA) – legends of the world jazz scene – will perform in the art center ILKO Gallery.
David Frisen is an American jazz bass player, playing upright bass and Oregon bass – electrified acoustic bass.
David Friesen’s music is imbued with different ingredients of jazz, characterized by mixing Jewish folk and classical melodies, lyrical power and warmth.
Joe Menis is still quite a young, but very experienced jazz musician and teacher who lives in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
He plays soprano saxophone and alto saxophone with Alan Jones sequencer. He has toured Europe with David Friesen, regularly plays in David’s quartet and quintet.
The CD "Risky Notion" was named the best album in 2015. Menis also played with Dr. Thomas Marfuno and Blacks Unlimited, including a performance in the Carnegie Hall. He also performed with George Coligan Quartet, Chuck Israel Jazz Orchestra, etc.
He received a Masters degree in Jazz Music and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Oregon. He is a lecturer at Portland State University and Portland Community College. He taught music at Umpqua Community College. His article "Rhythmic Analysis" was published in March 2012 in the JAZZed Magazine. Menis also writes for the Jazz Society from Jazzscene, Oregon.
