Ivan Vakarchuk – scientist and father of famous singer, who lived in Transcarpathia for a long time – has passed away

Ivan Vakarchuk died at the age of 73.

Ivan Vakarchuk was born on March 6, 1947. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Member of the Union for Science and Scientific and Technical Policy under the President of Ukraine, politician and a good person.

He lived in Mukachevo for a long time. There he had a son Svyatoslav – vocalist of the band "Okean Elzy" and a member of the Verkhovna Rada. Ivan Oleksandrovych was elected the rector of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in 1990. In 1991, he was elected the president of the Small Academy of Sciences of Lviv region. In 2001 he was re-elected the rector of Lviv National University.

On December 18, 2007 he was appointed the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine. He worked on that post until March 11, 2010. From 2010 until 2013 he once again was the rector of Lviv National University.
