International Day of Museums: what, where, when

Here is the list of the events in the museums that will take place on May 18 on the occasion of the International Day of Museums (pictured – events in 2018).

So, the Transcarpathian Local Lore Museum (Uzhgorod castle) invites you to the Open Doors Day. The program includes the presentation of the exhibition "Art and craft casting of Transcarpathia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries." There will also be temporary exhibitions: "Fragments of the Gothic carving of St. George’s Castle Church in stone" and art works by Oleksandr Tsanko "Forest fantasies." The photo exhibition of the Slovak photographer Pavel Kocis "The Crafts of Ancient Times" will take place in the gallery of the castle.

Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life (skansen) at Kapitulna st., 33 in the regional center also prepared an interesting program. It is the only museum to host the Night of Museums. The events in the skansen will be taking place from 9.30 until 23.30.

The program of the Museum Day starts at 9.30 with the Bishop Divine Liturgy on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the reopening of the Shelest church of St. Michael (1777). At 11.00 – the solemn opening of the VII Regional children’s folk festival "Rainbow chime"; pottery master classes in the workshop of the museum with masters Andriy Zubenko and Maria Polyanko; master classes on making of dolls with Lyudmila Hubal and ragdolls – with Olena Sihetiy. There will also be master classes on blacksmith’s crafts from the Free Transcarpathian Smithy – making of a medieval sword (Stepan Rusnak and Roman Murnyk). You will be able to take part in an open class on making of authentic medieval leather items and footwear in the old museum school. There will be tasting of eco-products from the valley of the Turya river valley in the old museum inn, and in the estate from the village of Tybava in Svalyava district – traditional children’s games and entertainment. In the exhibition halls of the museum, you will be able to see the exhibition of works by Artur Tyvodar "Mnemosina", V exhibition-contest "The World of Easter Egg – 2019" and the collection of wooden carved works by Fedir Babynets.

Now for the night in the skansen. The program starts at 19.00 with folk songs performed by folk-ethnographic ensemble "Lemkivchanka" from the village of Zarichovo in Perechyn district, at 19.30 – folk performance "Time Dance" performed by the Honored Academic Transcarpathian Folk Choir. Also, spring games and songs performed by students of the Faculty of Philology of UzhNU, a musical program from jazz ensemble "Pap Jazz Quartet" under the direction of Willi Pap. At 22.00-23.30 – special guest of the holiday – Joy Orchestra Vataha. The entrance to all events is free.

"Day in Museum" will also take palce in the Palanok castle (history museum) in Mukachevo. The program will take palce from 11.00 to 21.00 and will also be free. The lower courtyard of the castle (11.00-20.00) – craft town with master classes, medieval entertainment, fair of wine and honey products. The middle courtyard (11.00-18.00) – medieval music and dance. In the upper courtyard, a new exhibition "History of the city of Mukachevo" will be opened at 12.00; the opening of the exhibition of works from the museum’s funds will take place at 13.00 (art gallery); the performance of the folk folk group "Rusnaki" will start at 18.00. A quest-tour for children in the knight’s room is planned for 14.00, and for adults – at 17.00. At 19.00, a wine conference will begin there. 

Transcarpathian Regional Art Museum in Uzhgorod (Zhupanatska sq., 3) invites on this day at 14.00 to the grand opening of the exhibition of works of members of the Union of Professional Artists of Transcarpathia headed by Honored Artist of Ukraine Vasyl Brenzovych (the event will be held within the framework of the project "Culture of the Center of Europe – National Minorities of Transcarpathia"). The exhibition will run until June 10.

The memorial house – museum of the People’s Artist of Ukraine Andriy Kotska at Vinnychna st., 20 invites to a new exhibition "Winter motifs in the works of A. Kotska", which is the final one in the series "Seasons of the year in the landscapes of Andriy Kotska" that has been running there over the past few years.

The memorial house – museum of the People’s Artist of Ukraine Fedir Manaylo at Drugety st., 74 will present an exhibition of monumental works by the well-known artist. The solemn opening is at 11.00.   On the International Day of Museums, the memorial house will be open until 17.00 and entrance will be free.

You can also visit the house-museum of Academician Volodymyr Mykyta on Sobranetska street in Uzhgorod. The artist arranged there a display of 77 works of various creative periods. The artist will be glad to see the visitors, but by prior appointment.
