The 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in the former Czechoslovak Republic was celebrated yesterday with the opening of a photo exhibition about those events in the reading room of the Scientific Library of Uzhgorod National University.
This exhibition is being held here for the second time, this year it features more than 60 works.
At the official opening, it was said that the Velvet Revolution in 1989 had begun with the largest student rally and led to the collapse of the totalitarian communist regime, and subsequently the formation of two separate states – the Czech Republic and Slovakia – with a market economy.
The Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Uzhgorod Miroslav Mojżita and the Consul General of the Czech Republic in Lviv Pavel Pesek told about the importance of those events and the need to remember their history.
The Director of the Scientific Library of UzhNU Maria Medved thanked the foreign guests, in particular, for choosing the inversity library as the venue for the photo exhibition, because students were the driving force in the events of the Velvet Revolution.
The opening of the exposition was also attended by the Consul General of Hungary in Uzhgorod, József Buhajla, the acting mayor of Uzhgorod, Deputy Mayor Igor Fartushok, the First Deputy Chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Council Yosyp Borto, the Deputy Head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Olga Travina, the Honorary Consul of the Slovak Republic in Ukraine Oleg Adamchuk, Transcarpathian scientists, artists, teachers of UzhNU, studetns foreign guests.
