Mykhailo Polyak, the director of the National Clinical Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Transcarpathian Regional Council, at a briefing on October 23, noted that in addition to three cases of diphtheria in Transcarpathia, another 12 persons had positive test results.
"We examined two patients who were admitted to the regional clinical infectious hospital yesterday – they were diagnosed with amygdala diphtheria in mild form. Everyone’s condition is satisfactory, but the fact that it is diphtheria is very alarming."
According to him, among the 44 person – in addition to the three already identified – pathogen was found in another 12, that is, 12 more people should be hospitalized. Doctors do not yet know whether they are carriers or they are really sick.
"The disease is easily transmitted by airborne droplets. This bacteria is resilient in the environment. It is bad that that there are carriers among the patients", – Mykhailo Polyak noted. – 121 students who contacted with patients will be examined within a few days.
He noted that there is enough vaccines in the region, but only 48% of the population had been vaccinated in the first nine months of this year. The number of vaccination refusals increased by 20 percent. In order to have collective immunity, the rate must be at least 95%.
