Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine, jointly with the regional and military prosecutor’s office, exposed a mechanism of regular bribe-taking by the management of a forestry in Transcarpathia.
Law enforcement officers found out that the organizers and participants of the corruption scheme were the head of the forestry, two of his subordinates and an official of the State Service of Mining Supervision and Industrial Safety. The officials were extorting money from local businessmen for permits for logging in assigned areas. They would provide permits for the use of machinery to perform hazardous work to businesses without the necessary checks, thus violating legislation on occupational health and safety.
Employees of the Security Service detained a forestry official in one of the coffee shops in the district center when he was receiving a bribe of six thousand hryvnia. During the searches in the offices of the forestry management, the operatives found fifteen thousand hryvnia.
The criminal proceeding under Part 3 of Art 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine has been opened.
Urgent operational-investigative measures are being taken.
