The 61st anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and the liberation struggle of 1956 was traditionally commemorated today in Uzhgorod near the memorial sign, which is located next to the historical and cultural center "Owl’s Nest".
The head of the Transcarpathian regional administration Hennadiy Moskal, the first deputy chairman of the Regional Council Yosyp Borto, Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv, people’s deputy of Ukraine Laszlo Brenzovych, Hungarian Consul General in Uzhgorod Jozef Buhayla, heads of national cultural societies, schoolchildren, city residents came to commemorate the events and their significance in the history of Europe.
After brief speeches, they laid flowers to the monument, then marched to the Uzhgorod prison, where a memorial plaque in memory of the tragic events of the Hungarian Revolution is set, and laid flowers and wreaths there.
– In those difficult times, many Transcarpathians expressed their protest against the invasion of Soviet troops in Hungary and lost their own freedom for that, – the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration said during the speech. – Today’s events bring us back to the events of 1956, to the memory of the revolutionaries who were fighting for democracy. And for the sake of democracy, they were willing to give up their freedom and even lives.
