In 2012, 5.5 million hryvnias worth of forest was illegally felled in Transcarpathia

Last year, law enforcement authorities in the field of environmental protection instituted 17 criminal cases, 729 officials of the executive authorities were brought to justice and refunded to the budget almost 600,000 UAH. 

Over the past year due to illegal logging in the region, forestry sector suffered losses of more than 5.5 million hryvnias. There are also problems in the field of labor safety. Thus, during logging operations four foresters were fatally injured, another one was severly injured. Most deaths occurred in Rakhiv forestry research farm. Also, regulatory authorities of the region revealed that SFE often sell timber at below cost price and sell products not by auctions, as required by law. Because of violations of the law, Prosecutor General of Ukraine instituted prosecution of directors of Volovets and Rakhiv forestry enterprises.
