Officers of the Office for Combating Cybercrime in Lviv region, together with investigators of the Galician Police Department of Lviv region, shut down illegal activity of persons involved in violation of the Law of Ukraine "On Copyright and Related Rights".
During the pre-trial investigation, the policemen found out that the offenders relayed known Ukrainian TV channels using special equipment without the permission of the right holders. To do this, they set up private firms which provided services to clients.
Illegal relaying of the channels took place during 2018-2020 in the territory of Lviv and Rivne regions, as well as in Transcarpathia, where the central office was located. On March 5, law enforcement agencies conducted searches in the offices and premises of the offenders in the three regions. More than 120 pieces of network equipment, computer equipment, mobile phones, bank cards, information storage, documents, stamps, checks and draft records were found and seized.
The pre-trial investigation has been initiated in the framework of the criminal proceedings opened under Part 3 of Article 176 (violation of copyright and related rights) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for a maximum sentence of imprisonment for a term of three to six years with or without deprivation of the right to occupy certain positions or engage in certain activities for a term of up to three years.
