Recently, the cases of illegal and very large-scale deforestration in the region have become flagrant. Residents of mountain areas post striking photos of the Carpathians, which are becoming visibly "bald" and trucks with wood passing through Transcarpathia almost every day. Environmentalists are raising the alarm: these "sanitary cuttings" will lead to great disaster.
Uzhgorod Press Club gathered information on the number of criminal cases over illegal logging. However, these figures do not actually describe the big picture.
According to prosecutors of Transcarpathian region, in 2015, the total number of criminal offenses on illegal felling of forest under Art. 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine was 139. Most cases of illegal logging were recorded in Tyachiv (29) and Rakhiv (20) districts. Khust is not far behind – 19 criminal proceedings. Mukachevo district – 16 cases, Velyky Berezny and Mizhhirya districts – 10 each. Other districts – less than ten.
This year, law enforcement officers in Transcarpathia, have initiated 52 criminal proceedings over illegal felling of trees under Art. 246 Criminal Code of Ukraine (as of 17.03.2016). Most cases have been opened in Mizhhirya district (13), Rakhiv and Tyachiv (8 each). Velyky Berezny and Mukachevo districts have 5 criminal proceedings on deforestation. Volovets and Perechyn distrits – three each.
