Hungarian organizations appealed to the Prosecutor General for explanations

After the scandal caused by the video of Ukrainians receiving Hungarian passports at the neighboring country’s consulate, the Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said that Ukrainians with passports from other countries would be deprived of citizenship. Recall that, according to him, the Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings over the incidence of dual citizenship among the inhabitants of Transcarpathia.

Hungarian organizations of Transcarpathia appealed to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko regarding the statements about the initiated investigation into the issuance of Hungarian passports to residents of Transcarpathian region and the prosecution of persons, who have received such passports.

The Karpatskij Objektiv published a statement signed by the heads of the public organization "Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia" Vasyl Brenzovych and the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Ukraine Laszlo Zubanych containing the following questions:

  • If this investigation has indeed been initiated, please explain why it is being conducted only with regard to the issuance of Hungarian passports and only to residents of Transcarpathian region, while is well-known that citizens of Ukraine, residents of other regions of Ukraine also acquire the citizenship of other states. What are the reasons for this discrimination?
  • What legislation of Ukraine was violated by residents of Transcarpathian region who have become holders of Hungarian passports?
  • What legislative act of Ukraine provides for the responsibility for acquiring the citizenship of another state and what is the responsibility for this?

Thanks in advance for the reply, sincerely…
