Beregovo District Council of Transcarpathian region today during a plenary session adopted a decision that gave the Hungarian language regional status in the district.
As chairman of the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Ukraine, Mayor of Beregovo Istvan Gajdos said, this decision was voted by 45 of the 52 deputies present at the session. According to Gajdos, from now on plenary sessions of Beregovo District Council will be accompanied by simultaneous translation into Hungarian, the decisions will be publishe also in two languages. Besides the union head said that henceforth the Hungarian language along with Ukrainian will be used in the work, record keeping and documentation of the district council executive office, the district council sessions, conferences, meetings and other official gatherings organized by the Executive Office with the provision, if necessary, of appropriate translation.
"Texts of official announcements and messages of District Council Executive Office will be distributed in two languages. Besides the name of the Beregovo district council and its executive office, the inscriptions on their seals, stamps, letterheads and signs will also be duplicated in Hungarian" – added I. Gajdos. Furthermore, according to the decision of the District Council, in Beregovo district measures aimed at preventing public humiliation of Ukrainian and regional Hungarian languages will be carried out.
Note: According to the census conducted in 2001, in Beregovo district of Transcarpathian region 54 000 persons reside, 76% of them consider themselves of Hungarian nationality. On September 7, 2012 Beregovo City Council granted Hungarian language regional status in the city. For this decision 26 out of 36 deputies present at the session voted.
