In 1645, the third church, transported from the village of Syanky in Turka district of Galicia, was erected in Kostryno. That is, the church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Kostryno is 100 years older than the church of St. Archangel Michael in Uzhok, built in 1745, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the late 1990s, the church was declared an Orthodox monastery. In 2014, contrary to the legislation and common sense, without any regard for ancient building and elementary patriotism, they began destroying the valuable attraction.
On the church hill, a massive ugly corridor was built along the trail. They cut 350-year-old eastern frame and attached a primitive extra room to it. Above the church, the construction of a house of scrap materials began, and on the east side – a wooden bell tower. All this is a gross violation of the attraction safety zone, which includes the whole fenced church area. All that is a mockery of normal aesthetic taste, an insult to everyone who loves Transcarpathia, its history and culture.
The following experts will tell all that and how to save this masterpiece of folk wooden architecture of Transcarpathia:
Mykhailo Syrokhman – art historian, the author of the fundamental publication about wooden churches of Transcarpathia;
Mykhailo Pryimych – art historian;
Tomas Sopko – the chief specialist for cultural heritage protection of the department of culture of the Transcarpathian Regional Administration.
The press conference will be held:
On Monday, September 17, at 14.00
at Uzhgorod, Drugety st., 60/1
