The most western regional center of Ukraine is now without the mayor. The Head of Uzhgorod Victor Pogorelov was prematurely dismissed at an extraordinary session of the City Council by the minimum required number of votes.
Protesters, who gathered deputies with the community on the revolutionary session, were ready to bring deputies in the hall themselves to gain the quorum of 41 votes. One hour after the beginning of the meeting they had the required number of votes. Since the electronic system "Viche" in the City Council was not working, they voted in person and openly, under the watchful eye of the community.
They voted for the resignation of the mayor unanimously. Victor Pogorelov himself, his son Andriy – member of the City Council – and several close deputies, mostly from "self-destroyed" "regional" faction, such as Belyakov, were not present at the meeting.
By the next decision they dismissed the current Secretary of the City Council Svitlana Korol, and appointed 32-year-old Victor Shchadey – the known in the region revolutionary – as the new Secretary, and therefore the de facto head of the city for a period when the city is without the mayor. He swore to the community to make every effort to maintain and improve the difficult situation in the city, to act as transparently as possible, and that he would not run for the mayor. The session appealed to the Verkhovna Rada with the request to appoint the election as soon as possible. And on Thursday, a new session of Uzhgorod City Council will be held.
