Information: Europe made a contribution to the development of women’s rights around the world on August 1, 2014, when the Council of Europe Convention on combating violence against women and domestic violence entered into force.

Also known as the "Istanbul Convention" – the document was opened for signing three years ago in Istanbul – it obliges governments, that have ratified it, to take specific measures to combat all forms of violence against women from harassment and sexual abuse to domestic violence, forced marriages and female genital mutilation.
