Well-known Transcarpathian TV worker Oleksandr Hereshko unveiled unique photographs from the archives of the TV company, capturing the world famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich playing a concert in the territory of Nevytsky castle, the prozak.info reported.
"These are not just rare photos. They are unique. In the 70s, there were not many major musical events in Transcarpathia. Musical life was mostly small-town. Plus some tours of Soviet stars and Hungarian rockers.
These photos show a world class cultural event. This man in 1974 became the leading conductor of the West. Headed the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington for 17 seasons. He was invited to Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra and many other world music brands.
Mstislav Rostropovich. Cellist, pianist, conductor, dissident, public figure. He won five Grammies. Music columnist of the newspaper "Daily Telegraph". Lloyd Webber called Rostropovich "the greatest cellist of all time"
The photos were taken in 1972. Rostropovich gives s concert in Nevytske castle in Transcarpathia. It was shocking at the time. There was nothing like that in USSR. Transcarpathia thus showed that it belonged to a different cultural world, which was also a kind of dissent.
Two years later Rostropovich will leave the USSR. Another four years later, he will be rid of Soviet citizenship.
The only other celebrity of such scale, that has ever visited Uzhgorod, is Sviatoslav Richter, the pianist" – Oleksandr Hereshko wrote in the comments to the photographs.
