Irshava is a district center in Transcarpathia. According to the folk legend, long time ago, people settled in the valley of the river, the Karpaty.putivnyk writes.
They noticed that during floods, the water in the river would become brown, like the color of rust (in Ukrainian – "irzha"). That is why, the river was named Irzhavka, and the small settlement on its banks was called Irzhava, which eventually transformed into Irshava.
