Hello from Africa: there may be red snow in Transcarpathia on Sunday

February 3, on Sunday, reddish precipitation is expected in the Carpathian Basin countries. It may be snow or rain, – the State Meteorological Service of Hungary reported.

Red precipitation is the most unpleasant to see, because it resembles blood. In the ancient time, red rain was a symbol of the Apocalypse and scared people no less than the solar eclipse. Ancient chroniclers Homer and Plutarch wrote about red (or bloody) rains. In the XIX century they were documented more thoroughly, and were observed in Italy, Greece and the southern regions of Spain.

Meanwhile, the reason for this phenomenon is just a red dust, which consists of red microorganisms. This kind of dust is formed in Africa and then is carried by wind to Europe.

In April 2005, there were some orange rains in Ukraine – in Mykolaiv region and in Crimea. Colored rain was also observed in Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kherson regions. Ukrainian weather forecasters said that the rain was orange as a result of a hurricane – the wind brought dust particles from North Africa.

In May 2013, there was a reddish rain with sand in Transcarpathia. Similar incident happened in the region in 2005 in Velyky Berezny district – it was a yellow snow. According to experts, it was brought by a strong wind from Europe, most likely from Hungary.
