Havashi paid for “diplomatic” smuggling

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko dismissed Oleg Havashi from the office of the Ambassador of Ukraine to Slovakia. The corresponding decree number 232/2016 was published today on the official website of the President.

Havashi was appointed as the Ambassador to Slovakia in September 2010. Before that, he was the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration. As the Decree was published today, changes on the official website of the Embassy in Slovakia have not yet been made.

The dismissal is attributed to the tobacco smuggling scandal. Recall that in May, in Transcarpathian region, customs officers detained a car of diplomat-smugglers and seized almost 60 thousand packs of cigarettes that they tried to illegally move to Slovakia.

Transcarpathian governor Hennadiy Moskal said that the driver was a resident of Kyiv Serhiy Lishchyshyn who is the spouse of the First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in Slovakia. He presented customs officer a passport, a certificate of registration for the vehicle, and a letter of the Embassy of Ukraine stating that the car was carrying a diplomatic cargo that was not subject to customs control.
