Free Ukrainian language courses for Transcarpathian Hungarians will start in January: Hungary will finance them

The official Budapest has begun to invest funds in teaching ethnic Hungarians living in Transcarpathia Ukrainian language.

This was stated at a meeting with journalists by representative of the Hungarian government, the Minister’s commissioner in charge of the cooperation between the border regions of Hungary and Ukraine Istvan Greja.

Greja said that the Ukrainian courses would be free of charge, and the project was aimed at removing the tension in the relations between Ukraine and Hungary.

"In view of the state of our relations, I suggested to organize Ukranian language courses for the Transcarpathian Hungarians, along with the Hungarian language courses for Transcarpathians. Within the first 48 hours after the announcement of the enrollment for Ukrainian language courses, about 300 Hungarians of Transcarpathia enrolled," – he said.

"These courses are a gesture. If the Ukrainian government thinks that the Transcarpathian Hungarians do not know Ukrainian language, then let us create conditions for people to learn this language," – Greja said.

The courses will start in early 2019.

The courses will be taught at the Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute named after Ferenc Rakoczi II, which is also funded by Hungary. The project is being implemented by the Genius Foundation, which operates at the Institute.
