September 1 in the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, an exhibition of live tropical butterflies opened. It was initiated by Yevhen Azhypa, a graduate of the Faculty of Biology of UzhNU, and his colleague from the capital – Yaroslav Romankevych.
Butterflies come from Indonesia, the Philippines, South and North America.
Visiting the hall of the museum, you find yourself in the tropical atmosphere – butterflies are all around you: some fly, others sit on the windows, wall, floor and even in cocoons. You can also see how tropical butterflies feed on and, if lucky, how they are born.
Currently, there are 80 exhibits. Of those, so far, there are only 12 different species, but they promise to show more than 30 different tropical butterflies by the end of the month. Yevhen Azhypa promises that every week the museum will show visitors new species.
The exhibition has been already visited by many guests, mostly children, and no wonder, for in Uzhgorod such exhibition is held for the first time.
The most frequent question asked by visitors of the museum is: "How long do these butterflies live?"
We are no exception. And they live an average of three days to a week. There are those which live up to 3 months, and some – just for one day (only to create a new offspring) – it all depends on their diet and species.
Butterflies, as we noticed, eat: bananas, grapefruit and honey with water. One of the butterflies, which is believed to be the largest in the world, – Attacus atlas, whose wingspan is up to 24 cm – does not eat at all (it lives on the fat deposits in the body).
In the small hall of the museum, there are many things worth seeing, so if you have free time, make youself a holiday. The exhibition will run until the end of the month.
The admission fee for adults is 35 UAH, for children – 20 UAH,
For children under 5 years the admission is free.
