On July 12, 2018, for the first time in many decades, an archaeological expedition began researching the church of St. George (XIII (?) – early XVIII centuries), the remains of which have been preserved in the territory of Uzhgorod castle.
The organizers of the expedition are Uzhgorod National University, the Municipal Establishment "Transcarpathian Regional Local Lore Museum" of the Transcarpathian Regional Council and the Transcarpathian Center for Tourism, Local Studies, Excursions and Sports for Students (School of Young Archeologist). The head of the expedition is the candidate of historical sciences, the assistant professor of Uzhgorod National University V.V. Moizhes, the coordinator is the senior researcher of the museum Oleksandr Dzembas.
During the first week of the expedition, they found in the church a brick floor of mid-XVI century and several half-ruined burial grounds dated back to early XV century. Many details of small architectural structures have been collected, which can later become important elements during conservation and restoration of the monument. Also, they found many fragments of clay dishes, tiles and some other household items. The works are being carried according to the coordinated plan.
