Experts from the EU are studying the situation at the Solotvyno salt mine

The expert commission of the European Union has come to Transcarpathia. Together with experts of Hungary led by the representative of the neighboring country’s government István Joo, the experts will analyze the situation at the State Enterprise "Solotvyno salt mine." At the initiative of the Transcarpathian Regional Council, early this year, the Government of Ukraine appealed to the EU about the critical situation that has developed at the Transcarpathian salt mines. Now, experts of the European Commission on humanitarian aid and crisis management want to assess the existing threats on the site.

On Monday, July 4, the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Hennadiy Moskal met with the team of experts.
– Mining works at the salt mine stopped nearly ten years ago. Increased inflow of groundwater led to flooding of mines, allergic hospitals were closed, karst caverns have formed in the territory, – H. Moskal said, describing the situation. – There is danger of the ingress of water from this area to the Tisa river. This will be an environmental disaster not only for Transcarpathia and neighboring Hungary but for the whole of Europe.

As noted by a representative of the European Commission Directorate General Edmunds Akitis, the EU experts are in Transcarpathia with the assessment mission.

"We will study the situation on the ground, make assessments to develop projects before the arrival of the expert group. It’s quite a long way, and we have just made the first steps", – he said.

On Tuesday, the EU experts will visit Solotvyno salt mine.
