Do not spend too much time in social networks because they can deteriorate the memory – scientists

Social media can be a cause of deterioration of short-term memory.

That is the conclusion reached by researchers from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (Sweden).

As one of the researchers Erik Fransen says, Internet surfing may affect the brain’s ability to collect the necessary information, the World Nature News reported.

People rely on "working memory" (or short-term, as it is called) to navigate in the world around them. If this memory is good, it means that people can collect information in order to perform certain work.

Other studies have shown that children with good short-term memory do well in math.

Stucking online leaves brain less time for "cleaning" and it can not get rid of junk information.

As explained by the Swedish researcher, when you spend a long time in Facebook, it becomes more difficult for the brain to keep all the things that are "online" and those that you actually need.

To process the information coming into the brain from a speech or a video, it needs part of the working memory system. Thus, active "facebookers" reduce their free capacity of short-term memory.

"If you’re trying to retain a lot of things in your working memory, you process the information worse", – Erik Fransen says.
