On Sunday, March 26, at 3.00, Ukraine switches to daylight-saving time. The clock must be set forward one hour, so this day is one hour shorter. Seasonal time shift takes place in Ukraine twice a year, on the last Sunday of March and October.
Now, this tradition in Ukraine is common, but just a few decades ago it was not used.
Note that the practice of changing time twice a year is spread around the world. However, Ukrainians and residents of other countries each year in spring and autumn wonder about the necessity of such practice, because it is not always clear what is the reason for it.
Since it is believed that it helps to save electricity, in 2007, scientists of the University of Osaka (Japan) developed a computer model to calculate the seasonal time shifts. This model showed no appreciable energy saving.
In general, it seems that keeping the seasonal time shifts is only an established social tradition. There is no much evidence that it helps to save energy.
