As we reported, today, active Uzhgorod citizens on the initiative of the UBC bicycle community, picketed the office of the Regional Forestry and Hunting Range Administration. The reason is the controversial felling in the beautiful forest in the Shakhta neighborhood, which adorns the city and is a great place for walks.
Responding to the citizens, the main forester of Transcarpathia, Valeriy Murha could do nothing but promise not to touch the forest in the future. Here is how the press service of the Transcarpathian RFHRA commented on it:
"On Wednesday, January 31, the head of the Transcarpathian Regional Forestry and Hunting Range Administration, his first deputy – the chief forester Igor Kotsur and the director of the Uzhgorod State Forestry Vasyl Kyi met with members of "Uzhhorod Bicycle Culture" together with environmentalists and activists of tourist groups and other residents of Uzhgorod regarding the harvesting of wood around the "Shakhta" neighbourhood.
The activists are concerned that after the meeting of the company’s employees and representatives of the public, where they discussed the issue of sanitary felling in the sectors 10. 11 of the Uzhgorod forestry, the logging allegedly continues. On December 20, following the meeting, a joint decision on the termination of timber harvesting at these sites was taken. That said, the company retained the right to take the already harvested timber from the forest and to cut dangerous trees. However, when foresters began to take out the timber, active residents appealed to the leadership of Transcarpathian RFHRA.
The citizens served the head of the RFHRA an "oral request" to stop cutting.
In this regard, Valeriy Murha stated:
– The will of the people is above all. I assure you that foresters will not be harvesting timber in the "Shakhta" neighbourhood. Otherwise, responsible officers of the Uzhgorod State Forestry will be fired."
Well, let’s keep this promise in mind and see how it will be kept.
