According to the Slovak portal KOŠICE:DNES, yesterday, August 21, on the 49th anniversary of the occupation of Soviet troops into the territory of Czechoslovakia, a demonstrational act of de-communization took place in the Slovak city of Kosice, with which Uzhgorod has had long-standing partner relations.
On August 21, a group of local residents came to the monument to the soldiers-liberators and dismantled from the obelisk sickles and hammers. Instead, they left there leaflets that explained that communist symbols in the center of the European city were the propaganda of the criminal regime.
Representatives of the local and state police were ensuring the order during the rally.
It is important to note that nobody attempted to destroy the monument itself. The city residents respect the warriors who helped the country to get rid of fascists, the memory of the heroism of those people is always preserved. But the ideological symbols, which discredited themselves 49 years ago, ended up where they belong – in the dump.
