Dangerous balcony in the historic center of Uzhgorod began to collapse

Uzhgorod.in has repeatedly reported about the emergency condition of the facades of buildings in the historic part of the city.

In the center of Uzhgorod, above the entrance to the popular restaurant, a danger from above is threatening passers-by: a decorative volute on the balcony beam has collapsed.

Cracks in this decorative element have been widening, and one did not need to be a prophet to predict that the plaster was about to fall.

Today, what had to happen happened. A heavy piece fell from the front part of the beam, fortunately without hurting anyone.

The rest of the volute also holds "on spit and bailing wire."

The owners of the restaurant "Cactus" told that they have been "raising the alarm" for two years now.     

– It’s not even about funding – Yelizaveta Arendash, the co-owner of the restaurant says – we can not take responsibility for repairing the structure, especially in the historical part of the city. We suggested – find specialists, who will be able to reproduce this stucco, and we will solve the issue of co-financing. But now we see that repairs are being performed elsewhere.

We are very relieved that today tragedy did not happen. But what next? Waiting for worse times?

PS In less than an hour, the balcony above the "Cactus" was rid of the dangerous volute. The decoration could not stand a light tapping on it to test the stability and collapsed completely. Thus, safety won the authenticity of the facade.

Hopefully, experts will be able to reconstruct the destroyed volute using the remaining one as a model. Of course, if the city government wants to preserve the historic charm of Uzhgorod…
