At the press conference in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), in Transylvania (Romania), the President of the National Election Commission (NVI), Pálffy Ilona, said that during the preparation for the next general election in 2018, in order to obtain information on the possibility of taking part in the elections, in the second half of October, they would send 650,000 letters to Hungarian citizens who have the right to vote in the elections but do not have a Hungarian address. This was reported by the Myhungary.net. The letters addressed to about 294,000 Hungarians living abroad, who are already registered for voting, will have enclosed forms for updating the relevant data.
All other citizens of Hungary residing abroad will receive registration forms. By filling out the registration forms, Hungarians will be able to register and take part in the voting. However, letters with registration forms should be sent in advance. The acceptance of forms for entering data to the register ends 15 days before election day. Registration for participation in elections is valid for ten years, however, voters taking part in elections automatically extend the registration period. The registration form or the form for updating the relevant data can be downloaded and sent to the website of the National Election Commission http://www.valasztas.hu/. Pálffy Ilona particularly emphasized the importance of informing about changes in addresses. The 2018 election budget will be 8.1 billion forints, which is 600 million forints more than that in 2014. In the spring, April or May 2018, 199 members of the Hungarian Parliament will be elected at the general election, of which 106 deputies will be elected in single-mandate constituencies, and the remaining 93 will be elected in a single national constituency with proportional representation of political parties. Hungarians, who do not have a permanent residence in Hungary, can vote only in the single national constituency for political parties.
