June 9, 1866 in the afternoon, near the village of Knyahynya in Velyky Berezny district, there was a meteor rain. About a thousand fragments jointly weighing nearly half a ton were collected and sent to ten foreign museums. The largest one, nearly 250 kg, was found eight kilometers from the village of Knyahynya on the hillside of the Mt. Stinka (1078 m) and is kept at the Vienna Natural History Museum.
Locals still retell stories of their ancestors on how the meteorite hit the ground with a loud roar and burst of fire.
European scientists were studying and discussing the Transcarpathian meteorite for years.
At the site of the meteorite fall, there is a memorial sign.
On June 11, 2016, on the territory of Uzhanskyi National Park, in the "Chorni Mlaky" tract, near the village of Knyahynya, there were celebrations on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the largest meteorite fall in Europe.
A new memorial sign and information tables were set at the crash site.
The celebrations were attended by representatives of Poland, Slovakia, the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, officials of Velyky Berezny district, Uzhanskyi National Park workers, heads of villages, and, of course, residents of Velyky Berezny district and tourists.
It is pleasing to note that the crash site, the history of the Knyahynya meteorite and an incredibly beautiful nature of the Carpathian Mountains attract many tourists to our region.
