For years, Transcarpathians and tourists have been enjoying a vibrant, fun and original event – the regional festival-contest of caroling collectives. It was held annually in January in the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life and was a real unforgettable holiday every time. All districts were presenting their best and most valuable carols and Nativity plays: from the Hutsul Rakhiv region to the valley dwellers; representatives of different nationalities living in the region were also showing their Christmas programs. But there have been no announcements of the event this year. We asked the director of the museum, Vasyl Kotsan – will there be carolers in the museum this year? Here is what he replied: "This year, "Caroling in the Old Village" will take place, but in a slightly different form. It was included to the "Vasyllya" Festival, which will take place from January 12 to 14. Caroling will be beginning at 10:00 on Teatralna Square, where there will be a stage and performances of the caroling groups. All caroling groups, after presenting their programs on the stage on the square, will immediately go to the museum and present their caroling traditions and folk cuisine there. As always, each district will hold presentations in their own hut in the museum. But there will be no stage in the museum. Carolers will be receiving guests in the huts, there will be a fair of folk artists, a separate place for taking photographs, and so on. Welcome!"
And here is how they were caroling in the old village last year, when a real frosty winter was also creating the mood.
