This year’s rally-requiem in Uzhgorod to commemorate the victims of the Holodomor – the genocide of the Ukrainian people – was held at a new location.
The new monument to the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine was unveiled on Nezalezhnist embankment near the medical faculty of UzhNU.
The monument "Candle of Memory" was created by the sculptor Igor Hrechanyk, his work won the competition. Starting his speech, he thanked the head of the Regional State Administration Moskal and his deputy Mikulin: "…without these people there would be no monument."
Until now, Uzhgorod was the only regional center without a monument on this topic. "This is the main work of my life," – the author noted.
Despite the fact that the sculpture itself received mixed and often critical responses from Uzhgorod residents, the event was emotional. After the official speeches, there was a minute of silence, and a little girl recited a poem about the Holodomor… An ecumenical service was held near the monument. And, in the end, people lit candles and lanterns as a sign of the living memory of the Holodomor. Millions of Ukrainians did the same today to show that they do not forget this terrible crime and those who suffered and died…
