The Bethlehem fire of peace was distributed this morning in Uzhgorod at the Holy Cross Greek Catholic Cathedral.
From hand to hand, from one scout cell to the next, the Bethlehem Fire every year crosses borders and brings Christians together on Christmas Eve. This year the fire was brought by Uzhgorod Plast members, together with Slovak scouts, from Vienna, where it had been delivered to from the birthplace of Jesus Christ – Bethlehem.
Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv was also present at the ceremonial delivery of the fire. The event was attended by about a hundred Transcarpathian Plast members from Uzhgorod, Beregovo, Dovhe, Mukachevo and Khust, who will take the fire to their cities, villages, cells and parishes.
The Bishop of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Diocese Milan Shashik solemnly lit a candle from the lamp brought by scouts. Then, they conducted the divine liturgy on the occasion of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin.
At the end of the service, the organizers reminded the history of the tradition and thanked, in particular, the Uzhgorod City Council for their assistance and everyone in the temple for taking part in the tradition calling for peace and unity.
The faithfuls lit candles and lamps from the fire of Bethlehem to bring a part of it to their homes. The fire will be kept in the cathedral for several days. It is also planned to bring it to the Uzhgorod City Council at the next session.
