The construction of the Beskid tunnel, that will connect Lviv region and Transcarpathia through the Carpathian Mountains, has begun! The new tunnel, that will be part of the 5th Crete international corridor, should be commissioned in three years.
"The length of the tunnel will be 1,864.5 meters, it will be 10.5 meters in width, and the height of passage will be 8.5 meters. The highest point in the soil above the tunnel will be 182 meters", – the head of the Directorate for the construction of the Beskid tunnel Volodymyr Harlan said.
Beskid tunnel is being built by the Ukrainian Railways for the money of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The project will cost more than 2 billion hryvnias. Of these, 1.5 billion is the cost of construction and installation work.
The Beskid tunnel is being built 30 meters away from the existing one which was built back in the days of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The new tunnel, unlike the existing one, will be two-way, which will twice increase the speed of passage, and therefore the number of trains. The old tunnel, after the opening of the new one, will be used as a backup.
