In ancient times, the white stork was considered a bird of fate, a harbinger of happiness and prosperity. So it was believed that saving a stork brings happiness and luck
Facebook user Anna Pashchuk posted in the group Uzhgorod information that in Maly Berezny a father stork had died, and a mother stork was left alone. Anna asks ornithologists for advice: whether it’s worth feeding the stork to help save it and the kids.
Unfortunately, the comments to the post are not comforting. In particular, Nadezhda Nadya states that:
"Most likely, the female will throw eggs out of the nest, because they are hatching them together – male by day and female by night. In addition, these birds have the instinct to abort some of their laid eggs or hatched chicks (as a way of adjusting family size to the amount of food available).”
Stella Artush posted on Facebook a video, which shows that people are not leaving the stork alone with distress.
“We hope that (after the loss of the mate) the stork will live and will not leave its nest with eggs. Well, done guys – managed to feed them,” – she wrote.
The State Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine posted on its Facebook page the expert advice provided by the ornithologist, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Head of the department Andriy Bokotey.
“If you believe that the birds really need your help (though most of the time they do not), you can feed them. Don’t approach storks closer than 50 m.
The main feed for storks is insects, fish, amphibians, rodents. These birds do not eat vegetable!!! The birds will take grain, bread, boiled potatoes, etc., but it will not be good for them. Storks should be fed with fish, meat or eggs.”
So we hope that after all the stork will take help from people and will live and have descendants!
