A 27-year-old Ternopil resident resorted to an extraordinary method, trying to smuggle 25 packs of cigarettes across the Ukrainian-Hungarian border as a gift to friends in Norway.
The young man was going through the customs post "Tisa" of the Transcarpathian customs by a car "Volkswagen Transporter". During the customs control he chose the "green corridor". During the oral interrogation, he assured the customs officers that he was not carrying any hidden goods across the border. However, the inspectors noticed the nervous behavior of the man, and they decided to check the car in the box for in-depth inspection. As a result, the inspectors found hidden tobacco products. The ingenious Ukrainian hid 250 packs of cigarettes of various brands in the car’s niches, access to which became possible after dismantling the decorative trim of the car interior walls and wooden panels, which were fastened with self-tapping screws and closed the holes in the hollow structural cavities. The young man later confessed to customs officers that he was carrying the hidden cigarettes to Norway as a gift to his friends. A report was drawn up against the violator under Part 1 of Art. 483 of the Customs Code of Ukraine. Cigarettes worth UAH 12,685 and the car used to transport the goods hidden from customs control worth almost UAH 200,000 were seized pending a court decision.
