Hydrometeorologists are forecasting alternating heat waves and extremely high temperatures with cold, heavy rains, squalls and thunderstorms.
The forecast for the next two months has been developed by a head of the Climatic Research of Long-term Forecasts department of the Ukrainian Martazinova Wazir Research Hydrometeorological Institute.
Experts predict average May temperatures in the East to be above normal by 2 degrees (+17 – +19C), in the West – on average +12 – +15C.
"In the South and West extremely warm days will end with squalls and thunderstorms. The weather will be changeable not only in May but also in June and July. In mid-May, from 10th to 20th, the temperature will drop and stay within the norm. However frosts are possible. The temperature will fluctuate from 8 C at night to +18 – +22C by day. We are expecting warming again from May 20, up to +32 degrees. People are now planting vegetable gardens, so the weather will contribute to harvests. And in general this year the weather conditions will be good for agriculture",- said Martazinova.
For mid-May hydrometeorologists are forecasting heavy rainfall in the East, and at the end of May – in the West and South. Monthly rainfall here may fall in one day.
According to the expert June will begin with a cold snap, but then abnormal extreme heat is expected from June 5 to 15. The temperature will reach 10-12 degrees above normal.
"Because of warm June heavy rains are going to start all over Ukraine, the temperature at night in average will be +20 – +22. Dramatic warming will change to abrupt cold weather and rain. The drops will be felt, and this may end with a week of rain altered by a week of heat. As a result of global warming in the middle of summer it may even sleet", predicted Martazinova.
Generally in the East drought will last the whole summer, but in the West it will be rainy. Only central Ukraine is not likely to have heavy rainfall.
