Armenians of Transcarpathia commemorate victims of Armenian Genocide (PHOTOS)

Every year, representatives of the Armenian diaspora in Transcarpathia gather near Khachkar, a monument set on Kyivska embankment to light candles, lay flowers and honor the memory of the victims of genocide in the Ottoman Empire, which began in 1915.

– We have no right to forget about those tragic events, – Ovakim Arutyunyan, a guest from Kyiv, representative of the Armenian Union of Ukraine, said – and the main goal of the annual celebration is to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again.

To note

Khachkar – a stone stele with an image of the cross – is a traditional Armenian monument. It is usually set up near roads, monasteries, and temples. In Uzhgorod, it was set in 2015, on the hundredth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. It was made of tuff by masters in Armenia.
